An Update from Grace, Post COP30
Hello all, Grace here…
I am honored to be writing from the home of my grandmother in the Indigenous community of my father, grandfather and great-grandfather, land that has been the home of the Amazonian Shuar people for thousands of years.
I have had some time now to begin to digest my experience attending COP30 in Belem, Brazil. I was able to meet Indigenous leaders of communities and movements, and allies, and watch them all speak to and celebrate the work they have done.
They shared their work in the preservation of culture, tied intricately to place and land, land that needs legal protection from extraction in their home countries.
I heard people share stories of innovation, describing the balance in weaving traditional cultural knowledge with the systems of capitalism: keeping integrity of the sacredness in cultural food, clothing, artwork, etc. while creating business to financially benefit local communities, Indigenous people and Afro-descendant peoples.
All of this work to ensure prosperous livelihoods of millions of people around the world is achieved when the voices of their representatives are heard, and their demands are acted on.
Yes, some important progress was made in these regards at COP30 and that should be celebrated, and there is still so much to be addressed.
It is a shame when powerful language demanding change and justice and action is softened for the benefit of extractive industries with governments at their beck and call.
This is why I am asking you to put your support, in whatever way you are able, with me, my family, and the Indigenous leaders who work for the rights of the people and the earth that is home to us all.
